How to learn magic: A guide for the woo-curious

Have you ever felt drawn to the mystical world of magic but wondered where to begin? Perhaps you've been eyeing an oracle deck, felt drawn into the crystal shop, or just sensed there's something deeper calling to you beyond the mundane world.

Maybe you’ve gotten a spark of intuition you couldn’t quite explain, or found yourself lurking on a magical or occult subreddit, fascinated by what you’ve read.

No matter how you’ve found your way here, you’re wondering how to learn magic (or magick, as it’s sometimes spelled). Wondering if magic is “real.” And wondering if you can, at the very least, learn more.

Just so you know, magic isn't some distant fantasy reserved for the chosen few. It's a practical skill that most anyone can develop, much like learning to cook, garden, or play an instrument.

We all have these gifts inside of us, since we’re a soul spirit having a human experience…and while the average human experience is not designed to recognize these gifts (much less foster or nurture them), we have to intentionally work on bringing them into focus.

Magic teaches you to work with the unseen energies that surround us every day, helping you create positive change in your life and connect more deeply with the world around you.

Magic helps you remember how to embrace the things you fully understood to be real as a child. Things like imaginary friends, playing make-believe, and actually using your imagination.

Is It Possible To Learn Magic?

Before we dive into how to learn magic, let's clarify something. When we talk about learning magic, we're not discussing stage illusions or fantasy spells. We’re not talking about magic tricks here.

And we’re not talking about something external or foreign. Magic is inside of us, and we’ve just forgotten how to activate it.

Magic explores the art of working with natural energies, intuition, and intention to create meaningful change in your life.

Magic is fundamentally about:

  • Energy awareness: Learning to sense and work with the subtle energies around you

  • Intention setting: Focusing your will and desire to manifest positive outcomes

  • Spiritual connection: Deepening your relationship with nature, the universe, and your inner wisdom

  • Personal empowerment: Taking active responsibility for your spiritual growth and life direction

Think of magic as a language — one that speaks through energy.

Once you begin to understand this language, you'll discover that magic has been surrounding you all along.

As when you’re learning any new skill, it’s important to start with the basics. A lot of witchy and woo-curious folks want to jump right into casting spells and making potions. Which are some of the coolest parts of magic. But that’s like trying to knit a sweater before you’ve learned to knit a scarf. You’ve got to master the foundational skills before moving on to the more advanced stuff, OK?

When I’m teaching students in Magic School, we always start with a foundation in the Clairs and elements.

Once you’ve gotten those two concepts down, you can move forward into more complex workings like chakras, energy healing, potions, magical creatures, and spellwork.

How To Learn Real Magic With The Clairs: Developing Your Intuition

Maybe you’ve heard the term clairvoyance before. Clairvoyance refers to the ability to “see” things in your mind’s eye, typically before they happen.

But it’s not the only kind of intuitive ability. A “clair” is simply a term for an intuitive or psychic sense. It can be channeled through any of your senses. The term Clair comes from the French word for “clear.”

The most common clairs include:

  • Clairvoyance (clear seeing): The ability to receive visual information beyond normal sight. You might see images in your mind's eye during meditation, notice auras around people, or have vivid dreams that feel significant. If you're drawn to visual tools like oracle cards or find yourself "seeing" answers in your imagination, clairvoyance might be one of your stronger abilities.

  • Clairaudience (clear hearing): The gift of receiving auditory information from beyond the physical realm. This might manifest as hearing your name called when no one is around, receiving guidance as an inner voice, or suddenly having song lyrics pop into your head that perfectly answer a question you've been pondering.

  • Clairsentience (clear feeling): Perhaps the most common of the claires, this involves feeling or sensing energy and emotions. If you're someone who feels when a room has bad energy, gets gut feelings about people, or experiences physical sensations when touching objects with history, you may be clairsentient.

  • Claircognizance (clear knowing): The ability to simply "know" things without logical explanation. You might suddenly understand the solution to a problem, have insights about people you've just met, or feel certain about decisions without being able to explain why.

  • Clairgustance (clear tasting): Receiving taste sensations that provide spiritual information. This might involve tasting something that isn't physically present or having taste memories triggered by spiritual experiences.

  • Clairalience (clear smelling): Detecting scents that carry spiritual significance. Many people report smelling flowers, perfume, or other meaningful scents when connecting with spiritual energies or receiving messages.

Developing Your Clairs

The beautiful thing about the Clairs is that they tend to develop naturally as you practice magic, because these are amazing gifts we come to Earth with. Just like with anything else, if you don’t practice or nurture a gift, you tend to forget how to do it.

Here are some simple, gentle ways to strengthen these intuitive abilities:

> Meditation: Regular quiet time helps you distinguish between everyday thoughts and intuitive impressions.

> Journaling: Writing down your impressions, dreams, and gut feelings helps you track patterns and validate your experiences.

> Practice with friends: Ask a trusted friend to let you practice reading their energy or giving them intuitive impressions. Although, as with all new pursuits, be careful what you share with friends who may not be on the same witchy path as you.

> Trust first impressions: Your initial gut reaction is often your psychic sense speaking before your logical mind takes over.

> Listening to your internal whispers: When you get a hunch, a whisper, a little hit of intuition, don’t immediately silence that — sit back and listen. Oftentimes, the brain reverts to its default programming…which is simply conditioning that will tell you your psychic sense is hogwash, or just your imagination. Don’t let that part of your brain win. Every time you listen to your whispers, you strengthen your intuition.

Tools To Help Connect With Your Inner Wisdom

A lot of beginners find that their intuition becomes stronger as they use divination tools like oracle cards, tarot, and pendulums. However, you don’t need these kinds of tools to practice magic. And once you’ve learned the basics, you’ll find that magic is within you. You don’t necessarily need any external tools to divine your truth.

In other words, magical tools are just a means of increasing your focus.

I find for beginning practitioners, oracle cards are the most approachable magical tool. Unlike their cousin, the tarot, oracle cards are designed to be intuitive and encouraging, making them perfect for those just learning how to access their inner wisdom.

Oracle cards work by:

- Helping you tap into your subconscious knowledge

- Providing gentle guidance for daily decisions

- Strengthening your intuitive abilities

- Offering a framework for self-reflection and growth

Start with a deck that resonates with you visually and energetically. There's no "wrong" choice. Trust your instincts. Begin with simple one-card pulls, asking questions like "What do I need to know today?" or "How can I best support myself right now?"

While there is a superstition that says you should be gifted your first deck of oracle or tarot cards, most practicing witches agree this isn’t necessary.

Remember, developing your intuition is like strengthening a muscle — it takes time, patience, and regular practice. Don't be discouraged if you don't immediately have dramatic psychic experiences. Most intuitive development happens gradually and subtly.

The Elements: Understanding The Building Blocks Of Learning Magic

One of the other key concepts of beginning magic is that of the elements.

There are five main elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and Spirit. These are energetic forces that can guide and empower your magical work. The great thing about elements is — they are practical tools you can begin working with immediately. They surround us and are easily accessible for almost everyone.

Each element offers unique lessons and applications:

1. Earth

Earth teaches us about grounding, stability, and manifestation. When you're learning magic, Earth energy helps you stay centered and practical in your approach. Try holding a handful of soil or sitting against a tree to connect with Earth's steady wisdom.

2. Air

Air governs communication, intellect, and new beginnings. It's the element of breathwork, meditation, and mental clarity. Light a stick of incense and watch the smoke rise while you contemplate your magical intentions.

3. Fire

Fire represents transformation, passion, and willpower. It's the spark that ignites your magical practice and the force that burns away what no longer serves you. Even lighting a simple candle can connect you to Fire's transformative power.

4. Water

Water flows with emotion, intuition, and healing. It teaches us about adaptation and the power of going with the flow. Try making your bath a ritual to help align with Water's flowing wisdom.

5. Spirit

Spirit is the unifying principle among the other elements, the center of consciousness, wisdom, and higher purpose. It's the sacred thread that weaves through Earth's grounding stability, Air's mental clarity, Fire's transformative power, and Water's flowing intuition.

Spirit represents your connection to something greater than yourself, whether you call it the Universe, God, Angels, Source, or Divine energy. It's the part of you that knows your soul's purpose, guides your highest choices, and reminds you that you're part of an interconnected web of existence. When you work with Spirit, you're tapping into the wisdom that transcends ordinary understanding and aligning with your truest, most authentic self.

Crystals: Nature's Energy Amplifiers

If you're wondering how to learn magic in a tangible way, crystals offer one of the most accessible entry points. These beautiful Earth treasures aren't just pretty decorations, although they are so beautiful.

They're powerful tools for focusing and amplifying your intentions.

Quantum physics and mechanics teach us that everything in the universe is constantly in motion and vibrates at different frequencies. Crystals are no different. (1)

When you start to become attuned to energy, you can feel this vibration from different crystals.

Start with a few of these beginner-friendly crystals the next time you’re near the crystal shop:

Clear Quartz is known as the "master healer" because it can amplify any intention you set. Hold it during meditation or carry it in your pocket as you go about your day.

Amethyst enhances intuition and spiritual connection. Place it on your nightstand to promote meaningful dreams and spiritual insights.

Rose Quartz opens your heart to love and compassion, including self-love. Keep it nearby when you're doing any magical work focused on relationships or healing.

Tourmaline provides protection and grounding. It's perfect for beginners who want to feel safe and centered as they explore their magical abilities.

The key to working with crystals isn't memorizing complex properties. It's learning to feel their energy and trust your intuition about which ones call to you.

Your Simplified Path To Trusting The Magic Within

Now that you understand the foundational elements, let's create a practical roadmap for how to learn magic effectively. Remember, magic is a practice, not a destination. Be patient with yourself as you develop these new skills.

Here are some things I’ve worked on with my clients and Magic School students that have helped them to get in touch with and trust their inner magic.

See if any of these ideas resonate with you and give one a try!

Daily Practice: Spend 10 minutes each morning in quiet reflection. This could be meditation, journaling, or simply sitting in nature. The goal is to begin tuning into subtle energies and your inner voice.

Examples of some journal prompts:

- How do I want to feel today?

- When do I feel most connected to something greater than myself?

- What am I hoping to gain from learning and trusting my inner voice?

Elemental Exercise: Choose one element to work with each day. On Earth days, spend time in your garden or hold a stone. On Air days, practice deep breathing or burn incense. On Fire days, light a candle and focus on its flame. On Water days, take a mindful bath or sit by a body of water. On Spirit days, feel into when you feel like you are being divinely guided, when you hit every green light, or everything seems to be going your way.

Build Your “Altar”: Create a simple sacred space in your home. This doesn't need to be elaborate — a small table with a candle, a crystal, and a meaningful object is perfect. You can use this space for your daily practice.

Crystal Work: Choose one crystal to work with for the entire week. Carry it, meditate with it, and pay attention to how you feel when it's near.

Energy Work: Practice sensing the energy of different objects, plants, or even people (with their permission, of course). Notice the subtle differences you feel.

Community Connection: Consider joining online groups or a local coven where you can share your experiences and learn from others on similar paths.

If all of this is resonating with you, I’d love to have you join Magic School, an 8-week program where I’ll help you learn to develop your own gifts in your own way. Learn more about this transformational experience here.

Just be mindful and be sure to trust your intuition here, with any practice that is shown to you, discernment of what lands or resonates with you is the most important part of discovering your magic or your inner voice. Take what resonates with you and leave the rest.

Common Spiritual Challenges And How To Overcome Them

As you learn magic, you'll likely encounter some common obstacles. Remember, be gentle with yourself. You’re learning something new. It’s OK to be a newbie at something!

Many times when we embark on a spiritual path, it can stir up feelings of inadequacy. Notice those feelings, acknowledge them, and then release them. You are not the only one who feels this way.

Here are some of the most common things I hear from my students in Magic School:

 "I Don't Feel Anything"

This is completely normal! Magical sensitivity develops over time. Keep practicing consistently, and trust that subtle changes are happening even if you can't perceive them yet. We’ve been taught to numb out or distract ourselves, so be patient.

"I'm Not Sure If I'm Doing It Right"

There's no single "right" way to practice magic. If your practice feels meaningful and you're growing personally, you're on the right track. Trust your intuition over rigid rules.

"I Feel Overwhelmed by All the Information"

Focus on one aspect at a time. It's better to deeply understand one element or tool than to superficially dabble in everything. Quality over quantity always wins.

"I'm Worried About What Others Will Think"

Your spiritual journey is personal and sacred. You don't need to share your practice with skeptics, but don't let their potential reactions prevent you from exploring what calls to you.

The Real Magic: Consistent Practice

The secret to learning magic is in the power of consistent, daily practice. Just as a musician becomes skilled through regular practice, your magical abilities will develop through regular engagement with these tools and concepts.

Start small and be consistent.

Creating Your Personal Magical Practice

As you develop your skills, you'll naturally begin to create a practice that's uniquely yours.

This might include:

- Morning card pulls and intention setting

- Evening gratitude and energy clearing

- Weekly crystal cleansing and charging

- Monthly ritual celebrations

- Seasonal practices that align with natural cycles of the moon

Remember, your magical practice should feel nourishing and authentic to you. If something doesn't resonate, modify it or set it aside. Magic is meant to enhance your life, not burden it with a whole bunch of “shoulds.”
